Chief Whip of the Lok Sabha and BJP leader Anurag Thakur was honoured with the Sansad Ratna Award for distinguished performance as a parliamentarian. He is the first from the BJP and the only MP from northern India to have been presented with the Jury Committee Special Award. MP Thakur represents Hamirpur constituency from Himachal Pradesh.
Governor of Tamil Nadu, Banwarilal Purohit gave the award to MP Thakur at an event in Chennai.
"I am extremely delighted to receive this award as it is being given for distinguished performance under Jury Committee Special Award. Being a public representative, I have always attempted to raise my voice in the Parliament for pertinent issues relating to Himachal Pradesh and national interest, at large. I would like to dedicate this award to the people of Himachal Pradesh for their continued support and faith in me," the BJP MP said in a statement.
President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam recommended setting up of the Sansad Ratna Awards. The former president launched the first edition in 2010 with the aim of honouring the performance of Indian Parliamentarians.
In its tenth edition, the award was given to the twelve most accomplished parliamentarians at the 16th Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The award was also presented to the outstanding ‘Departmentally Related Parliamentary Standing Committee’.
