To improve the country’s defence capabilities, scientists from Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), have been working on all-terrain artificial intelligence (AI) - assisted robots that might patrol the country’s borders. The inventors think they may have the first model ready by December this year.
BEL CMD Gowthama M V said, “AI will change how some critical operations are conducted by the armed forces, and our robots will even be able to patrol the borders.”
“Future wars will not be fought on conventional basis …. AI enabled products will aid decision-making. Robots can save lives of soldiers deployed for border surveillance. The Centre is making efforts to ensure that martyr families are provided a compensation of not less than 1 crore. AI enabled robots can also help in saving precious lives,” he added.
The BEL robot will have sensors and will be able to communicate with its control centre. It will also help in post disaster management, at the same time continuing reconnaissance of the area. The estimated costs of such robots are about Rs 70 to 80 lakhs, but could be less if more orders are placed, said Gowthama M V.
BEL expects that the first prototype robot will be finished by Dec 2019 and will be trial -ready by Feb 2020.
